Welcome to SanJoseCopwatch.org STOP Police Misconduct, Corruption, and Brutality in San Jose, California

Welcome to Copwatch. San Jose, California.

San Jose Copwatch is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to monitoring San Jose Police activity and non-violently asserting our rights. San Jose Copwatch  is one of many Copwatch Chapters that have sprung up across the United States and Canada, in various forms. San Jose Copwatch is based on the idea that WATCHING the police is a crucial first step in the process of organizing. We do not attempt to interfere in legitimate police activity or to resist police misconduct physically. It is our hope that, one day, mass outrage at police and government violence will increase to a point where fundamental change in the nature of policing become inevitable.

San Jose, California Copwatch's Goals:

1) Reduce police brutality, misconduct, and corruption within the San Jose Police Department by directly observing the police on the street, documenting incidents and keeping  the San Jose Police accountable. We maintain principles of non-violence while asserting the rights of the detained person. We provide support to victims of the San Jose Police whenever possible. We also seek to
educate the public with "Know your Rights" Seminars.
2) Empower and unite the community to resist police abuse. We will do this by sharing information with the community, conducting "Know Your Rights" trainings, sponsoring rallies, supporting victims of  San Jose Police  and other community based efforts to deal with these problems.

3) Encourage people to solve problems WITHOUT police intervention. We want to explore alternatives to calling the police.  This is especially important in San Jose because of the serious problems within the San Jose Police Department which is widely reputed to be one of most corrupt and out of control police departments in the region with an alarmingly high proportion of rouge police officers .

4) Most importantly, we encourage people to exercise their right to observe the police and to advocate for, support,  protect one another.

I’ve lost faith in the criminal justice system because it has let me down. It’s funny because every attorney I speak to ask the same thing, "Why did you talk to the police?"   -- Ramon Vasquez
